Dont Focus on perfection when giving first aid
Today i got the opportunity to do some assessing for students on a 3 day first aid training course Bury St Edmunds.
I really get a buzz out of it as the students start by coming into the assessment room very nervous about having to demonstrate what they have been learning to a total stranger!
i try to put them at ease by explaining that as a first aid training colchester assessor i am not looking for perfection but instead a competent and confident application of the skills learnt.
The reason for this is that in a real first aid situation a first aider is unlikely to do everything required 100% perfectly and focusing on perfection can cause you to hesitate instead of helping.
Remember “Adequate Care Provided is better than Perfect Care Withheld”
Once the students realise that they are more than capable of carrying out the practical assessments and answer the questions correctly they start to open up and actually enjoy the process!
Well done to all you today!
